Fionnphort Granite Geology Walk - Route Details

Fionnphort Granite Geology Walk, SW Mull - Route Description

Meet up just outside the cafe at Fionnphort. A short walk over the moor takes you to a place where you can see sheets of lamprophyre rock curring across the granite  creating spectacular scenery. Excellent views over to Iona as well. A fault cuts the granite here and is really obvious - note the way the shape of the landscape is determined by the way the granite was intruded. Head back to the pier

Second part of the wlak involves heading over to the quarry at Tormore  - easy walking over sometimes boggy ground. Note the huge split boulder on the shore. The quarry is an interesting place where the process of quarrying the granite can be well seen.  Down onto the shore and see various dykes that cut the granite - some of these contain mantle xenoliths

There are variations within the granite such as parts that are syenitic and veins of aplite. These will be pointed out and explained. A good short walk and an excellent introduction to the Ross of Mull granite which has been exported and used all over the world.
